Chapter Eleven
Shardra rushed to Skyâs side and wrapped her desperate arms around him. Tears poured down her cheeks as she checked him over for injuries.
From what I could see, except for exhaustion, half drowning and a twisted wing, he was doing well enough. The soft words of consolation he gave his lover confirmed as much.
But Zem strode up to Sky and asked him to test out his wing.
Sky stood and extended his wings, grimacing as he did so. Shardra exclaimed and shot Zem a look that could have killed.
We all studied the wing that wouldnât fully extend.
âItâs a break in one of the smaller bones here,â Zem said with interest, gently touching a spot half way along the expanse, where a splintered white bone protruded through the skin. âIf itâs anything like a human bone it can be realigned and...â
âI can do it,â Landor interrupted gently, coming to study the wing that was starting to droop from the effort required to hold it up.
Zem wasnât the only one whoâd forgotten Landorâs healing abilities. Zem smiled at him in relief and frowned a little at Landorâs stiff response. Gods, this was not good. How long before my men forgave Zem?
âSit and Iâll work on it,â Landor told Sky, who was happy to do so.
While Shardra sat in the sand in front of Sky, wrapped in his arms, Landor stood behind the halfling and placed his glowing hands on the wing. Few people beyond The Five had ever seen the full extent of Landorâs abilities, though they knew of it and had seen him heal a cut on Skyâs hand. Now they got to witness firsthand what many would call a miracle. There was magic and then there was what Landor could do. It went far beyond any normal healerâs magical ability.
The shipâs crew closed in around us for a better look, and I stepped back out of the way. I had witnessed enough of Landorâs healings, and the need to get off my feet outweighed the pleasure of watching him at work. Grabbing up a water bladder from nearby, I staggered off and collapsed on the sand well away from the crowd. I noted Zem had done the same, but had taken his seat some distance from me.
Was I glad? In the heat of the moment, my hurt feelings had disappeared and left only my total trust in my best friend and husband. But now? Now I just didnât know whether I wanted him at my side or not. Yet by keeping my distance I was showing the rest of my harem that I was still hurting. They would blame Zem and keep up their own barriers to him. That couldnât continue.
So I did what was right and staggered over to Zemâs side. For a long time we sat like that, silent and yet together. It was familiar and comfortable, even though Zem had closed his mind to me. In the past, his voice might have been silent but his mind never was.
